So I've decided i want to max out my motherboard while i still can.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/870%20Extreme3/?cat=CPU

I currently have an Athlon II x3 450 with whatever heat sink and fan came with it. I'm thinking about getting a Phenom II X6 1100T since its the beefiest available for my board. If I do this do I need the replace my cooling or will the stock unit I have be sufficient? While am at it, is the X6 a good Idea at 3.3GHz or as an X4 at 3.7GHz a worthwhile consideration. My Athlon is a 3.2GHz so I know I don't want to go down. Maybe Phenom II X6 1090 to save a few buck buy why so the 1100T is probably the right decision with.

Yes I know it is not an option for your board. When I said Ryzen I meant upgrade cpu, motherboard, and memory.

Throwing good money into an old system is not forward thinking. It would be better to save your money and upgrade to something current.
For example you can get a Ryzen 1200, an AM4 motherboard, and 8gb of ddr4 memory for around 250 dollars. This would blow the doors off any x3, x4, or x6 Athlon. Also down the line if you save some more you can upgrade to a juicy new 8 core 16 thread cpu. AMD has stated that the AM4 socket will be used through 2020.

You might want to think about it before you spend your money on an old cpu.

I don't think Ryzen is an option for my board. https://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/870%20Extreme3/index.asp#CPU
According to that list at least. Am I wrong? Any Phenom I get will be used because they pretty much are not available new anymore.

I see. I'm surprised I could do all that so cheap. that must be all lower end stuff because the prices I see are a but higher. Either way, if I can Max out this system I have and keep it going a few more years I think I'm better off. Then I'm leaving nothing on the table with this motherboard. I don't do any intense gaming. A little Battlefield 2 or mods running on the Half-Life Source engine. Amazon browsing is probably our most intense activity. Lol. Come 2021 I can hit the ground running with the latest and greatest. I'm a little late to maxing out this board but oh well. It still runs strong enough but figure I may as well do it just because.

Yes the Ryzen 1200 is the bottom of the rung for the new AMD cpus. You should remember though that motherboard can not only handle the lowest Ryzen but can upgrade to the Ryzen 1800x 8 core 16 threads or 2000 series or the 3000 series when they come on the market. Please read this before you decide to throw good to a bad cause.

And now your current cpu.

Please think about this. It may just save you money in the long run.

Thanks, I'll read it after work. If I get a low end Ryzen now though I won be upgrading it before 2021 and by then it sounds like the AM4 Will be bcoming obsolete. I'll see what the article says.

I suggest that if you do decide to upgrade this computer, get the fastest X4 you can. A six core Phenom II is not going to do much for you. The Phenom IIs were more effective at higher clock speeds, not with more cores.

I had an X3 once that I unlocked the fourth core on. The stock cooler kept temps acceptable...barely. So the stock cooler you have might work, depending on which X4 you get, but it's likely to run hot and loud. A cheap(~$15) cooler can deal with that if it starts to annoy you.

A Ryzen upgrade would be best of course, but it's pricey these days due to DDR4 costs.

I'll take a look at what X4s are out there. Much cheaper than the x6s I can find. I was unsuccessful with unlocking my X3. Must have a bad core I guess.
