How to use Hitachi Feature Tool?

So I have an Hitachi hard drive that can utilize an MS DOS program called Hitachi Feature Tool. The program allows you to change things such as drive speed, AMM, APM, etc. I'm running Windows 10 and used a tool called DOS Box to run it. When I open it up it says no drives detected. Clicking "Rescan Bus" it says Detecting IDE Primary Master & Primary Slave" and then "Detecting IDE Secondary Master & Secondary Slave." Since this is a SATA drive, does this mean I'm out of luck?

Sorry, but it requires real-mode DOS in order to have access to the hardware, which is why it comes with bootable IBM PC-DOS. You'll have to boot DOS from CD or even USB floppy(!) to use it.

DOSBox is a hardware emulator, and the program can't find any "drives" because DOSBox doesn't include any simulated ones but uses mapping.

I have tried both using a USB drive and a CD drive. With the USB, I used Rufus to create a DOS bootable drive but it didn't work. Even after changing boot order and compatibility support module to legacy it still didn't work. Also burned to CD and that didn't work either. It just says "no operating system found".

You are not alone. Tried this tonight since I want to adjust the power management of an old Hitachi drive.
Booted from DOS CD, no luck. Reformated the drive as FAT32 since NTFS drives may not be recognized under DOS, no luck.

The tools definitely works on SATA drives, but it may not on modern motherboards.

Edit: Try CrystalDiskInfo instead. The standard edition will work.
Run it, go to Function/Advanced Features/AAM/APM Control

From there select your Hitachi drive and you can make those changes.
The other features such as Device Capacity and Cache Management don't seem to be available, but there might be other ways to access them.

Yup, I don't think it'll work unless you find a machine running Windows XP and you have a floppy drive handy. I just wanted to change the drive from SATA 1.5 Gbps to 3 Gbps. Not that it really matters since the drive can't saturate SATA I speeds anyway. BTW, if you're just looking to change the noise and power management, you could use CrystalDiskInfo. In CrystalDiskInfo, go to Function > Advanced Feature > AAM/APM Control > Use dropdown to select your drive > Move the sliders to where you want and click Enable. I know that AAM works but I don't know if APM works since it seems to turn off after I shut off my computer. My drive is a HITACHI HDE721010SLA330. A Deskstar EK1000
1 TB drive.
