I was wondering if I pulled out my i5 3470 cpu from my HP Compaq 6300 MicroTower and put it into an Dell Optiplex motherboard like the ones from the 390 ,790, etc., would it work? Also I intend on buying a cheap case like the Rosewill FBM-01, would the motherboard fit in it and would the cpu and other components work smoothly?

Edit: To be a little more specific for example the motherboard would be a Optiplex 790 MT motherboard and the model numebr is HY9JP.

Solution
Yes, that was the other caveat with using an OEM motherboard.

I agree, you would be better off just using the Dell's case along with the motherboard.

I did a little bit of searching and I think that the Optiplex 790 motherboard is a standard mATX.

So the CPU and motherboard should work right?

Edit: I found out that the Optiplex has proprietary front panel connectors so I might as well just buy the whole thing with the motherboard included and put the cpu in.

Alright, so I guess I could find a 7010 case with motherboard and put the CPU in and everything else and this would work?

There are a few issues. The motherboard plate, the one that goes around the rear ports, might be riveted to the Dell case. The Dell motherboard may not only have proprietary front panel connectors but also a proprietary power button and proprietary thermal sensor. If any of these things are not detected on boot up, you might get error messages.

You could probably mod things and get it all to work more or less, but that's a lot of work and for what? The CPU switch is easy. So yeah, buy your complete computer and simply throw the 3470 in it and call it done. This is why the people who do the 'Get a cheap Dell and make it a gaming computer' thing just add a videocard and maybe a power supply. Once you start wanting to do things like switch motherboards or use another case then you shouldn't be buying a pre-built.

This would be the simplest and most effective option.
