Sound Cut Out and Stutter Issues

Hi, I am having a sound issue with my Dell Optiplex 990 (Service Tag CWQJLS1).

The sound will cut out and stutter when I stream audio. Each cutout lasts about 1-2 seconds. I have tried streaming from multiple sources, including Spotify, Pandora, iHeart Radio, Radio.com, Tunein.com. The problem occurs with all of these sources.

I have also tried all of the fixes listed below. None solved the problem.

• Changed the speakers. Including the 3.5mm audio cable.
• Changed the router.
• Changed the Ethernet cable that connects the router to my computer. It is a hard wired connection. A desktop computer without WiFi.

I streamed all of these services over my iPhone. Using both WIFI and without WIFI. The problem did not occur. Sound was fine.

I also own a laptop, and streamed all of these services over my laptop with a hard wired Ethernet connection to my router. The problem did not occur. Sound was fine. I tried swapping speakers, cables, etc. Still the sound was fine. No issues.

I wanted to test whether it could possibly be a slow Internet connection. Speedtest shows both my desktop and laptop operating at 55Mbps for both download and upload. My laptop does have WIFI, so I disconnected the Ethernet cable and my WIFI Internet speed dropped to 20Mbps. I re-ran all tests and the sound came through fine on the laptop. No cut outs or stutters. This leads me to believe a slow Internet connection is not the source of the problem.

I tried to record the sound using a program called Audacity, which records all sounds on a computer. But Audacity did not record the cut outs and stutters. It was smooth sound through the recording. Even though I wrote down the exact second the cut outs occurred. Not sure why this happened, and what the implications are for the source of the cut outs.

To add one more layer to this issue, this is my second new computer in the past month. I had no cut out or stutter issues with my old computer. Last month I purchased a refurbished Dell, and returned it to the seller because the sound was cutting out and stuttering as well as some other issues. The seller gave me a different computer. The one I own now. And the sound issue that was present with the first computer is also present in with current computer. The same exact symptoms in both computers.

I appreciate any input as to the source of the sound cut out and stuttering.

Processor is an Intel i7-2600 @ 3.4Ghz. 12 GB Ram. Windows 7 with all current updates installed.

Solution
Problem solved! I installed both the following and the sound cut out issues went away.

1) USB 3.5mm audio port. This cable connects to a USB port on one end and my 3.5mm audio jack on the other end. It overrides my internal 3.5mm audio port.

2) USB Network adaptor. This cable connects to a USB port on one end and my Ethernet cable on the other end. It overrides my internal network card.

Here is the big head scratcher. When used in combination, these two cables solve the problem. However, when each cable is used individually the problem persists. I have no idea how this could be true, but it is.

I would be interested to hear any ideas as to why the problem is only solved when both cables are used in combination.

Thank you...

Hi Robert,

I soaked a q-tip cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and inserted it into the 3.5mm jack port and swabbed it thoroughly. Then blasted it out with compressed air. This did not solve the problem. The sound is still cutting out.

What should I try next?

Hi Robert,

Your suggestion is certainly very logical. But remember this is my second computer in a row with this issue. Both were refurbished Dell Computers, but different model numbers. What are the odds that I received two computers in a row with bad motherboards?

I would like to add one other test which I performed. My computer has two 3.5mm audio ports. I performed all tests in the second 3.5mm audio port and the problem still persists. Sound still cuts out and stutters.

What do you think of these possible causes? I have not tested them yet. But I am just trying to cover the universe of possibilities.

1) Replace electrical cable that connects the PC to the wall outlet. (I would need to buy one).
2) Replace the cable that runs from my router to outside my house to connect to the DSL Internet.

Also, can you expand on what you meant by a grounding issue? Is that an issue with the PC? Wall outlet?

Thanks for the input.

Sometimes if you ever read, on live stages musicians don't ground (oh by this i meant earthing) their equipment because of buzzing and hissing noise.
Router isn't problem.
But i don't recommend as far as i know.
First try other outlests xD.
Other might be PC case grounding/earthing.

I can suggest, buy aftermarket motherboard, and fit rest of components if this looks like in your case

Breakthrough. I just spoke to my Internet Service Provider, Frontier Communications, and I have identified what I believe to be the source of the problem. I just need some help for how to fix it.

We did a Speedtest for both my Desktop and Laptop. Both came back at a solid 58 Mbps.

Then the representative sent a Ping test to both computers. The laptop passed with a score of 100%. All packets were transmitted. However, the desktop had a packet failure rate of 50%. Only 50% of the packets were successfully transmitted.

The rep said this shows a problem with the desktop. I am not exactly tech savvy in this area. So, based on this new information, my question to the forum is what is the problem with my desktop? And how do I fix it?

The rep mentioned a Trace Route, and I found the site https://www.ultratools.com/tools/traceRoute.

But I’m not familiar how to interpret the results or exactly how to act upon them.

The rep also said there could be an Internet configuration setting in my operating system. I have Windows 7 with all current updates installed. Not sure what settings I would adjust.

We are getting closer!

I appreciate any suggestions.

Hi Robert, that's ok. I appreciate all of your suggestions and enthusiasm.

Hopefully we can keep the ball rolling on this issue and find a solution. Maybe some other can jump in and contribute.
