Monitor not detecting VGA/DVI, maybe motherboard problem?

Monitor won't connect to computer. I've tried VGA and DVI ports but it says that the respective port isn't detected. I'm thinking it might be a problem with the computer part? It's my first build ever and it's supposed to be for gaming, but I keep running into problems. There was no spot on the motherboard or the gaming card for the CPU or PCI-E cables, so I left them unplugged. I can still hear the fans whirring inside though, so I know there's power going somewhere inside it.

Here's the computer build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/8dpcwV

And the monitor is an ASUS VS228 LCD.

The computer didn't have a VGA port so I bought an HDMI adapter from Best Buy, but it still said it wasn't detected.

After plugging the CPU cable into the motherboard, I connected the DVI port on the monitor to the DVI port on the graphics card and now it's working. Does this mean that I don't have to worry about the PCI-E cable not being plugged into anything at all?
