i7-8700k cpu core hotter than rest.

So basically, a few months after delidding my CPU, I noticed one of my cores being much hotter than the rest. I have tried reapplying the heat sink to the chip IHS multiple times, with the same results. I have tried rotating it 180° as well to see if there was a small change in how flat it was on one of the sides, with the same results on the same core. I am using liquid metal on both IHS sides, instead of compound/paste. I have no idea what else could be causing this, as I have tried everything I can think of. The temps don’t really affect anything because even doing the prime 95 on small FFT, my max temp is still only 67°. But it is a 18 to 15° temp change between the rest of the cores. I don’t know how the sensor movement test works, but in the attached picture, it does show core2 not having any movement. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance. I've never posted a picture via URL so I'm not sure which link will work, one link said "Direct Link", and the other just said, "Link". Again, thank you for any help.

I wouldn't worry because temps are very good anyway. 67 max is excellent. Did you remove all the glue after delidding? That can affect things. If you already did that then I'd have to just say it's because of the design of the CPU itself. Whether it be in the actual die or in the IHS I do not know. Some things cannot be known.

Yes, I completely cleaned all the old black sealant that went around the IHS originally. Ya I know it's not too bad, but it just annoys me to see it showing my temp at like 55 when gaming, and when all the other cores are high 30's. Guess it's something I'm just going to have to live with. I tried shutting down 2 of the cores, but it was still showing my "CPU Temp" as what the high temp core would have shown.

Try checking the temps with cpuid. You may get different results. A good way to see if either the reapplied lid on the cpu or heatsink is warped, would be to run something with a straight edge over it and see if you get full contact. You may have bowed the lid when you removed it.

Not sure how to reply on my iPhone to your message but I did try spinning the IHS 180 degrees when I tried reseating it. I don’t know how the cores line up on the die itself, but it’s worth a shot. Won’t be able to get to it until this weekend because I’m really busy this week and it’s annoying to remove it because I have a hard tube custom loop with 2 radiators and my 1080ti is cooled as well, so draining is a bitch even with a drain valve installed lol. Always end up with some liquid hiding somewhere in the loop and end up spilling some. That UV reactive blue with the floating silver metallic stuff is no fun to clean up.
