Intermittent fault, PC shuts down, usually during games but not always.

Hi
I'm pretty sure this is a PSU problem but wondering if you can shed some extra light on the problem?

About two months ago my PC would restart every time I shut it down. It would go through the normal logging off process, but then restart instead of shutting down. I thought 'strange' but "not to worry because I'll just turn it off at the back."

However, not long after I started to experience intermittent shutdowns/restarts (no blue screen or anything like that) mostly during games but occasionally browsing the web. This has now increased in frequency where it is no longer just an annoyance. It usually restarts immediately, although sometimes it may restart a few times before stably loading windows again.

It bugs me, why PCs that can do almost anything these days, can't bring up a message that says something like "Hey mate! I have a faulty power supply, RAM, CPU, please change me, etc."

But anyway that a side, my PSU is a good quality Corsair, but it is over 5 years old now, so it's plausible it's on its way out. The only other thing that concerns me. I recently broke one of my PCI Express slots when removing my graphics card. I have two X16 slots, and I now use the other one, but could it still cause a problem with the MB, like a shortage or something?

Thank you for reading my long winded question, and hope someone can confirm my suspicions, because I don't want to go out and buy the wrong part.

PS I read something relating to this problem which started out with some guy's PC only restarting when told to shutdown and then eventually restarting on its own. That was a PSU fault, but there are so many other conflicting arguments out there it's hard to know for certain.

I should add that my CPU and graphics card are running at the right temp, even in games. SO that should rule out overheating, at least as far as they're concerned.

Also I should add, that even if I hold down the power button and shut down that way, it still restarts, and the restart button works as normal. When I have more time in the next couple of days I'm going to check if the right pins are connected to the MB. Can't see why not though, it worked ok for years.

I'm now using my son's PSU. It's too early to tell if the problem is solved, but I'm amazed by the improved performance I'm getting in Kingdom Come Deliverance! Didn't know the PSU would effect performance? The bad news is my computer still restarts when I attempt to shut it down, so that problem isn't PSU related.

Everything going VERY smooth so far. Starting to think the problem was I didn't have my video card clipped down well enough! I'm going to revert back to my own PSU tomorrow then I'll know if it's either a PSU fault or didn't have things plugged in properly. I'll let everyone know the results to help others having similar problems.

I've reverted back to my own PSU and so far everything working fine, and with excellent performance. I think I can conclude therefore, that it was a badly connected graphics card that was causing lag and intermittent shut downs.
