aka "enough with the beachball!"

OS X El Capitan 10.11.6
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010)
Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3
Memory 4GB 1333 MHz ddr3
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 4670 256 MB

In the last week, there's been a noticeable decline in the responsiveness on my mac. In general, I'll get 5 seconds of normal, quick response to, say, opening a menu or selecting a file, then it'll pause and think for 5s to 30s. As I am typing this, I noticed that some of the recent actions, like inputing text here or when I opened the browser's menus (File or Edit drop downs), will be recalled quickly but when I do something new, like open a folder, it has to think.

When it first started happening, I thought that a program was running in the background, like doing an update,, something that was hogging memory. Or malware. So, this is what i've done so far to attempt a diagnosis:

-ran Disk Utility-First Aid. Said disk was ok

-I updated the program version on Avast Antivirus recently. First, I ran full scans on a few different days as new virus definitions came in. Nothing found. When I uninstalled Avast, nothing changed. Installed AVG antivirus, did a regular and a deep scan-nothing either.

-Attempted a Time Machine backup just-in-case on the regular hard drive. Program never got past 'preparing disk'. Gave it 30min two different times then I gave up.

-Restarted in Safe Mode. Same lag but with a flashy screen (Internet said it was normal for the screen refresh to be visible in Safe Mode)

The only other recent update was Adobe and maybe Chrome did one on it's own. As much as I can, I have updates set to ask first and not go automatically.

thanks for reading!

Solution
Would ensure you don't have any anti software. Make sure your desktop is clear. Documents in documents, photos in photos and so forth. 8GB of RAM is the minimum you should have. Its an i3 so you will not get performance out of it. Launch into safe boot to clear the cache (restart, had left shift key).
