How to recover files from HDD that my contain malware

After many attempts to try and fix my computer from what I think is malware, I simply reinstalled windows into my SSD. However , my secondary drive is an HDD , where all my downloads went. This means that if the malware was off something I downloaded it was initially there. When I reinstalled windows , I disconnected my HDD and deleted everything off the SSD. How could I safely reconnect my HDD to try to salvage it , or at least try to extract some of the important files? Before disconnecting and reinstalling , I ran a scan on the HDD and no viruses showed up. If there is no real safe way of trying to save it , how could I format it without having the malware start up? I had tried to google something about not allowing autorun to work on HDD but having trouble finding things. Any help is appreciated!

So even if the drive has any .exe that come with autorun or whatever they shouldn’t run ? So I am able to recover the files that I know are safe correct ? But what if I would like to use the HDD again as it is , how would I go about getting rid of the virus? See the thing is the virus scans never picked up any viruses or malware , but the computer was acting like it had one.

Well.....autorun only works when you are inserting a DVD or a USB or something similar and the autorun file I believe has to be in the root directory.

So...I don't think anything is going to "autorun" by itself.

What I would do is make it another drive....just NOT THE BOOT DRIVE.

So connect it to an open SATA port....then go into the BIOS and make sure it's not going to boot from it....make sure it boots from your other drive.

Now boot into Windows from your other drive and go to My Computer or whatever and that questionable drive should show up.

Now when you look at it you will see all the files. You can copy and paste whatever you want...just don't start any exe files or com files or anything like that.

Okay , I had it setup previously and my boot drive has always been my SSD. But I will try connecting it , going into BIOS and booting from SSD to make sure nothing happens. Thanks.
