Hi everybody - my computer has a i9-7900x, 64 gb ram, and gtx 1080ti. Also, I just changed the power supply (in trying to troubleshoot an issue I am about to mention)

99% of the time everything runs fine, but every once in a blue moon (a few times an hour at most) a vertical colored bar flashes or some type of graphical distortion flashes up on the screen. This never used to happen

ANy ideas waht this might most likely be?

Solution

OP has an i9-7900X, no IGP on HEDT chips, no video outputs on motherboards, will make that a little difficult :)

If OP is running a CPU/GPU overclock, start with resetting to stock clocks and voltages.
Doesn't sound like a monitor, it sounds like the graphics card (specifically the VRAM).

*I would shut down, remove the GTX1080Ti then hook the monitor to the motherboard to use your iGPU (increase VRAM amount if you use longer term).

WARNING - may be a clip/locking mechanism that secures the card to the motherboard that can be damaged if you incorrectly yank out the card (on my board I can't see it with the card installed but it's near the top on the motherboard and I pull it UP towards the top of the motherboard while removing the card

If that solves the issue then it's likely the card. If not it would be:
a) monitor, or
b) monitor cable

You could also try a different OUTPUT on the video card (DVI or HDMI instead of DP) to see if that changes anything. If it does NOT fix the issue then it removes the video card as the problem.

Basically:
1) GTX1080Ti, or
2) monitor, or
3) video cable
