Temperature issues with cpu

I have a i5-6700k and a masterliquid 240 cooler. Recently the temperatures while gaming have gone up to 80 degrees celsius, while on idle goes down to 30 degrees celsius, as well as a noise coming from either the block or around the fans when temperatures are high. Is this because my thermal paste applying skills are horrible, or because there might be something wrong with the pump? (Both CPU and Liquid cooler are fairly new)

Solution
Either. A bad mount or bad thermal paste application can cause high temps.

1. If you are using a PUMP labeled header on the motherboard, then pump speed is fine. If you are using a SYS_FAN header, ensure that the speed is set to max in BIOS settings. Also ensure your radiator fans are plugged into CPU_FAN. Try turning the fans to max/high performance.

2. Remount the cooler. Clean the old paste off and use a small vertical line. Too much paste acts as an insulator.

If re installation and proper configuration don't help then the cooler may need to be RMA'd. If you hear water gurgling sounds that is also a sign the cooler needs to be send back due to trapped air bubbles.
