Hi guys,

OK so here is where I am at.

I am new to this and not really a computer guy, just know enough to be dangerous lol. So you can laugh at this if you want but throw some helpful insight in as well lol.

Looking to buy a lightly used 16 tb wd mybook duo, take the hds out and put both hds in a hd docking station. Will I be able to do that and reformat the drives in the drives so they are blank ready to go without any leftover encryption? And also can i get a docking station that will allow me to see them as 1 16tb drive? I do not want to run them as jbod. If i can then I will just sell the duo case. Why? Because I can get the duo with 2 wd red drives for roughly the price of 1 new 8tb red that is new. I am on a budget here.

The reason I do not want to use the duo is because it encrypts the drives so if the enclosure fails I am kind of screwed and I do not want to play around trying to get my data off of the encrypted drives. I do not have any secret data that needs encrypted.

My plan is to connect to my desktop and run it as a media server with plex so I can watch my movies on the go pretty much anywhere. Also it will be as a backup storage for my movies and music. Kinf of a 2 for 1. I have a i5 3.2 Intel processor and 8 gig of ram with usb 3.0 ports, more than enough power to do what I need it to do. Especially since I will be just about the only one using the media server.

So again can I use the hds from the wd duo in a docking station? And can the docking station be recognized by my computer as 1 16tb drive?

With the computer I do not need a nas enclosure because my computer will be doing all the processing and yes I know it is a power hog but it will not be on all the time as it is just for me when I know I am going to need or use it. I am on a budget here and I feel like I am already going over it.

Thank you very much I do really appreciate it and any info or help I can get would be great.

Thanks
Shane

A lot of portable drives use proprietary docks and some to employ encryption. I would not recommend buying an external drive for the purpose of removing the drives. It sometimes voids the warranty and in some cases the drives are completely unreadable. Some of them have a unique controller ( that is part of the enclosure and even hooking the drive up to a PC through SATA doesn't work. You are setting yourself up for many possible problems and lost money. I would just buy the drives separately and buy a docking station separately if needed. Two 6TB drives would cost less. Even if two 8TB drives cost more I'd still go for them over taking the drives out of a MyBook.
