So if hard drive becomes un-useable, I replace it, put win7 dvd in and run restore backup from usb to replace all folders, files, registry, updates, everything that was originally there ?? It's 72 gbs on 75 gb drive now. I see online there's 128 gb usb sticks for around $90.
Which has me also wondering, Could I just use a 2nd usb stick instead of new hard drive, to reinstall win7 to and do restore backup to ??

Easier and cheaper to buy a 1TB USB drive. $50-$60.
Any of the current imaging tools can do this.
Macrium Reflect (my favorite), Acronis TrueImage, etc...

You create an Image with one of those tools, onto the external drive.
Use their Rescue USB (or CD) to boot from, and apply the Image to a new drive.

Basic backup...

You can use Windows' built-in backup program to have a backup, but you need to install back a Windows to restore, or you may use a third party backup to image the entire drive, you don't need a windows to restore it.

I much prefer Macrium Reflect for this.

Thx much. I behind in knowledge updating lol. I found from bit of searching, forums, customer reviews at Bestbuy, Amazon, etc, fair number of usb mem sticks get hot and glitch or become useless, especially the shorter stubby 1s with flashing light... Seems they may be fine for occasional small file transfers, editing, etc... but not huge data (16gbs+) constant transfer and updating like regular win-backup-updating ( except maybe smallish under 16 gbs win-backup updating which I think only replaces files that have changed since last backup and adds new 1s). And if that should fail, having the full usb ext hd is the 2nd full backup. So again, thx, an external usb hd is most reliable way to go for full windows and hd backup. Especially if high quality and comes with utilities on dvd or usb for this like Western Digital drives.

Download and install the Free version of Macrium Reflect.
https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

Run it, and play with the settings and backup options.

Roger thx. Much better then Western Digital utilities that come with their new usb ext backup hd ? As well as I was thinking trying win7's system image for this. If issue, the WD utilities. But maybe I should use the free Macrium you suggest ?

I use that Macrium daily.
Right now, as a matter of fact. One of my other systems is getting ready to do its scheduled nightly incremental backup.

I also use Macrium's free version. It does a full backup once a month, and takes the changes after the last full backup each two days. You'll need a drive at least twice the used size of your disks to have at least two full backups at your hand. You may take those backups on the same disk(Not recommended since it'll probably take the full backup again in the next one, how paradoxical) on another drive connected to your computer, or an external drive(Best option but you either have to connect it while backing up or restoring or keep it connected)

No good to use Windows 7 Ultimate to do "System Image", "System Repair Disc" and backup ?? Failing that, the Western Digital similar utilities that come with their Passport backup ext hd ?
