A few months ago I bought one of the 8 terabyte WD easystore external drives on sale at Best Buy. I later "shucked" (opened) the case to reveal a White (equivalent to a WD Red drive in specifications) drive with a SATA-to-USB adapter. I initialized and formatted the drive via USB and used it as a makeshift NAS connected to my router. I recently purchased a Synology NAS and I was hoping to wipe the White drive and install it into the Synology NAS. However, for some reason when I connect the drive via SATA cables in my desktop, neither the BIOS nor Windows can detect the drive; it does not appear in Disk Management or Device Manager. I even tried booting from a GParted Live USB and GParted could not see the drive. So I re-attached the SATA-to-USB adapter it came with, and suddenly Windows can detect it and utilize it just fine. I formatted and deleted the volume in Disk Management thinking that would solve the issue, but the drive is still not detected when I connect it internally using SATA power and data cables.
Is there any way that I can fix the drive so that it can communicate properly on just SATA and not USB? I would really like to use it for the NAS. For comparison, I recently purchased another 8TB easystore drive from Best Buy a few days ago, which had a WD Red drive inside. However, with the second drive I immediately removed it from the case and removed the adapter, and I was able to initialize and format it internally, so the second drive works fine when connected to SATA cables.
