So well,

just got an I7 8700k with an Dark Rock Pro 3.
I OCd th CPU to the 4,7Ghz on all cores and the MAX temps while gaming where 68-70C (dunno if this is good with such a big cooler..?).

So my question(s):

1. Would it be worth the effort/risk?
2. Which delidding tool should I use?
3. Should I NOT use liquid metal?
4. Is the risk high, that the CPU could break?

If you need anything more, ask please!

Rest of my System:

I7 8700k @ 4,7GhZ
Zotac GTX 1060 6GB
2x8GB Corsaier Vengeance @ 3000MhZ
Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 3
Dark Rock Pro 3 cooler

Solution
Delidding tools are safe, if you know what you are doing liquid metal gives a nice cooling performance boost as well.
Still if you add the costs of the tool liquid metal and all the fuss, you can spend the same money and effort improving your cpu cooler or even upgrading to the next generation i7 when that comes out.
Temperatures not hitting 80°C are nothing to worry about.

I think the i7 8700k will still be enough for gaming/streaming for atleast a few years, wont it?
Also, the next gen i7 processor would probably be not compatible with my MOBO, or am i wrong?

Thank you for the answer.

1. Would it be worth the effort/risk? No
2. Which delidding tool should I use? None
3. Should I NOT use liquid metal? You can
4. Is the risk high, that the CPU could break? Possible

That max temp. is normal. It doesn't leave much room for OC'ing. Delidding when done correctly can bring temps. down over 10c. That would give you the headroom. Make sure you KNOW what you're doing should you delid.

Well thank you for the answer.

So well, the guy above said its safe to use, you said its possible to break.
Sure I know you could still break it, but what chance is it to break it if done correctly? Should it be 100% safe if done correctly?

Aside from our imperfections it is very safe to do with the right tool. Dr. Delid comes to mind. Others will have their opinions.

I wanted to emphasize that you can spend your money better, I did exaggerate a bit. I do no know what mobo support will the next gen intel cpus have, I suppose they will not be compatible. You are right. The i7 8700k is without doubt a top processor and will serve you for long years.

The price difference between the i5-8600K and i7-8700K is about $100. Spending on Thermal Grizzly plus glue, plus delid kit also costs you $50 and spending another 50 for better cooling will not give you the same performance as a base clock i7.

Anyhow the der8auer has a good kit with EAN-Code: 4250144800974

Okey well, thank you very much!

I will think about it.. probably not wort it you are right.

my 2cents:

1. Would it be worth the effort/risk? generally not worth the effort, basically you are trading longevity of the CPU vs 3 year warranty. it contradicts each other. performance wise with liquid metal, you might see 200 Mhz more (no more than 5% vs not to delid) , you are already at 4.7 i'm sure you can push till 4.8 or even 4.9, delidding will give u -10 to -15 on the existing oc freq or allowing higher than 5.0 with a good cooler and chip (purely based on luck).

2. Which delidding tool should I use? der8auer has a nice tool kit mentioned by others.

3. Should I NOT use liquid metal? if you are planning to using traditional paste, i would say, it's not worth delidding, temperature difference are quick minor with traditional paste.

4. Is the risk high, that the CPU could break?
strictly speacking on the delidding process
the risk of damage the chip, when everything is done properly is quite low, i wound't use 100% but 95% seems reasonable with proper technique.

i personally don't recommend it, 30%+ performance gain might justify for this extra work, but definitely not 5~10%.
system works perfectly fine, why do extra work with little benefits, CPU absolute max temp is 100% for 8700k, anything below 80 i would say is fine.
you temperature of 70~ish which is great.

Thank you. Yeah I will probably not delid it..

I tried delidding an i3 4130 a few years ago and I ruined it. I wish I had kept it and left it was it was or bought a better cooler. No more delidding for me. Besides, you've got a great processor few people have, so if I were you I wouldn't even bother overclocking, let alone trying to delid it.
