Fan doing some very loud, weird noise

Hey all,

So, the fan on my asus n550 laptop suddenly became very noisy. Not noisy like when you start some application that requires high resources (games and stuff) and you hear the fan rotate faster.

It sounds as if something is clogging the fan. Or like there is a mini-drone flying inside my laptop. And when you touch the keyboard, you can feel the vibrations. The sound the fan makes is irregular.

I unmounted the laptop and cleaned the fan from both sides with a brush and a pressurised air duster can. Fan looks clean now.

However the noise persists.

Here are the temp that psensor gives me, with the laptop running for about an hour long. I may be wrong, but everything looks normal.

I need to mention that the screen has been bugging lately. Colors are pinkinsh. Display is fine on my external monitor, not on the laptop monitor. This may potentially be related to the fan issue.

Any idea what's going on ? Is it the fan that needs to be replaced ? Is it the motherboard ? anything else ?

oh, I saw someone suggested to remove the battery. That didn't help.

UPDATE 1 : ok, so I did a reboot with Windows (7), and the issue was gone. It was working fine with windows7. So, I did yet another reboot (under linux mint, which is my main working OS, I forgot to mention earlier), and it seems to be fine now. I don't believe the problem is solved yet though. CPU temp is at around 60deg now, slightly higher than before. CPU fan speed is at 2700rpm, however it rotates quietly atm.

I will update again tomorrow.

UPDATE 2 : the noisy fan issue starts at the GRUB invite before the OS even starts. So, I'm guessing the issue is unrelated to the OS. It may be a HW issue. A permanent issue.

THanks for the suggestion. I tried that and it did the trick. Not for long however. I don't want to insist as I'm afraid I would cause damage to the CPU.

At this stage, i'm thinking I should just replace the fan. Now, do you have any experience with fans ?

I see generic brands sold by Chinese on ebay. About $11 for one fan. There is also that website selling computer spare parts in singapore. They have the same fan (brand is sunon maglev), but they sell the fan for about $30.

Should I get the branded one, or will the generic brand from China do ?
