My cpu randomly heats up to over 100ºC from doing nothing and is then stuck at ca 10% performance, but the weird thing is that some days this does not happen at all, while other days it happens from the moment i turn on my PC.
Specs: GTX 680, i5 3570K, 16GB 1600, Z77A-G43, 750W, H55 Watercooler.

Yowza.

I see that you're running a water cooler on your CPU. It very well could be a bad pump causing the CPU to overheat. I would first check to ensure the block is firmly seated on the CPU.

You say that it is sometimes stuck at 10% performance. Is that an estimation or do you see the GHz of the CPU being throttled?

I don't know what is triggering it but whenever it happens my CPU goes to 100ºC and the utilization never goes over ca. 10% and the GHz are also lower than usual.

If the cooler was broken, wouldn't this problem be happening constant and consistently? I can play games for entire days without there being any problem, then the next day it can happen randomly while browsing youtube.

Thanks for posting this - I was starting to have some issues with high temperatures when my computer was idling, and I knew that coming here was going to be really helpful when I wanted to find the answers about it. Replying to see what others have to say in the future, as well, so that I can prevent the issue from happening.
