So im building a new PC and do not want to buy Windows if possible. I have a laptop I no longer use and would like to know if it is possible to take the HDD with Windows from my laptop, copy the OS to a new SSD, then use that SSD on my new PC. I dont care for any files on the HDD.

Solution
Legally, NO since the OS version is a OEM version.

In addition the product key has been associated with the motherboard of the laptop and most likely will not activate on the new hardware.

For multiple reasons, this will not work.

1. Licensing. The OS on the laptop drive is an OEM license, and tied to that particular system.

2. Operation. You can't just take a laptop drive and move it into a desktop and hope it boots up.
Even if you 'move' that OS to a different drive. Makes no difference.

Solution?
Sell the laptop and buy a new OS for your new desktop.
Anything over $100 is bonus money.
