I'm looking for a decent gaming CPU to compliment my RX480, I play at 1080p 60hz, I've done a bit of research and have an idea what I think might be suitable but am interested to hear your thoughts also. Would appreciate your advice. Will be making the purchase tonight.

as a true gamer, i would say go for the 8600k,

two reasons
1.After a year or two , game will require more cpu power, i see a lot of user. having a i5 non-k cpu (i5 4460, i5 7500/6500) asking what to do with mediocre fps , and unfortunately, most of our response will be sorry CPU bottle necked, nothing you can do, replace mobo+cpu.. where as user having 4690k/6600k, we will say, oc it to 4.5 Ghz it should be good for a while. the OC headroom makes up for 1 generational change in CPU. (GPU gains tends to be more significant)

2.most 1080p gaming are CPU bound, you see a linear gains in fps by pushing the cpu, especially in those single threaded/poorly optimized game (PUBG and WOW).

Well, we would need to know what the rest of your specs are...? AMD and Intel platforms/sockets aren't interchangeable. Furthermore you didn't state a budget. I'd personally ask you to go with a Ryzen 5 processor but if your budget allows, I'd ask you to get a Coffeelake platform.

Yeah sorry I'm currently rocking an I5 6500 on a H110 Motherboard, 16 GB DDR4 2133 but I'm not happy with 4c4t performance in some games. With current GPU prices I don't plan on an upgrade there for a good while, my budget allows for whatever makes sense in the long run.

staying with Intel since they perform better in games.
two choices, from me, see which one is more comfortable to you.

1. 8400 plus a cheap z370 board, around 350$
2. 7700k with cm hyper 212 on existing h110, similar price range, but will need a bios update to support 7th gen CPU properly (i consider as low/medium risk)

worth mentioning that 7700 come with stock cooler and sells for $300, it's about 10% ~slower clock wise. you can probably sell your 6500 to recover some cost too.

I would update your bios and go with the i7 7700. It will work fine on your current motherboard. Not much of a point in going with a "k" chip as your motherboard wont support overclocking. You will also save some money by not needed an aftermarket cooler. Microcenter has the 7700 on sale for $260 quite often if you live near one.

Sorry I'm not very good at this, also failed to mention I have a buyer for the I5 6500 and H110 MB, I'll definitely have to purchase a new MB along with CPU, I have a spare Evo 212x cooler though.
