I see, I was under the impression that the optane module would act as cache for frequently accessed files, kinda like a really fast bridge between ram, cpu, and storage. I had it in my mind that the optane might serve to speed up my old hdds (since reading your response I've done more reading on optane and I do see that it is indeed only intended to work with the boot drive, and the boot drive I have really isn't lacking in performance).
The idea behind raid was that I have all of these old, and i do mean old, hdds. Raid 0 would be nice for performance, maybe coming close to ssd read and write speeds, but mirroring wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea considering the age and overall hours on the hdds. I do have 8 of em, so why not.
I bought the optane first, before I ever picked up, or planned on getting, the 960 (got it nib on eBay dirt cheap). So now i have both. I'll just use the hdds, in 10 for mass file storage. I'll benchmark with and without the optane module and decide if its worth keeping or if I should sell it to my brother in law.
