Hdds I have vs ssds I'd need to buy...

So I have 8 500gb 7200rpm seagate barracuda Hdds leftover from an old server. I wanna put 6 of them in my 7700k gaming build in raid 10. I have a Samsung 512gb 960 pro m.2 and a 32gb optane slotted for my build so far with the m.2 hosting the os. The hdds are, in my mind, just mass storage. I'm wondering if that would be sufficient, or if I should just fork out the cash for a 2tb ssd, or two 1tbs in raid 0. First gaming build and really just trying to get opinions from those more knowledgeable. Thanks in advance.

The Optane, in this situation, is simply a waste of money.
It will do nothing for your 960 Pro boot drive. It would be an SSD to boost an already fast SSD. Zero gain.

2 z 1TB SSD's in RAID 0 are also a waste of money...

2 z 1TB SSD's in RAID 0 are also a waste of money. Either use them individually, or get a 2TB.
RAID 0 + SSD is a waste of resources.

"First gaming build"...
6 x 500GB HDD in RAID 10 is a waste of drive space and management hassle.
For stuff that ends up on the HDD's, it does not need any RAID whatever.

I see, I was under the impression that the optane module would act as cache for frequently accessed files, kinda like a really fast bridge between ram, cpu, and storage. I had it in my mind that the optane might serve to speed up my old hdds (since reading your response I've done more reading on optane and I do see that it is indeed only intended to work with the boot drive, and the boot drive I have really isn't lacking in performance).

The idea behind raid was that I have all of these old, and i do mean old, hdds. Raid 0 would be nice for performance, maybe coming close to ssd read and write speeds, but mirroring wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea considering the age and overall hours on the hdds. I do have 8 of em, so why not.

I bought the optane first, before I ever picked up, or planned on getting, the 960 (got it nib on eBay dirt cheap). So now i have both. I'll just use the hdds, in 10 for mass file storage. I'll benchmark with and without the optane module and decide if its worth keeping or if I should sell it to my brother in law.

The drives are just for storage right? Mass storage doesn't need speed. RAID is only going to add complexity and hassles for something that simply isn't needed. I have two SSDs in my system. One holds my OS, the other my steam folder. I then have other spinning drives to hold media files like my music library, etc. I get that you have old drives laying around and want to use them, but I wouldn't bother RAIDing them. Sell a couple, use a couple, be happy. Just keep it simple.
