How Long Should It Last?

My computer (which I built) is getting older - I’m worried that, in time, it’s finally going to die on me. That being said, I’m not sure if it’s going to be the processor (which is an i5) or the motherboard that goes out first. Which of these usually “goes bad” first? After 8 years of use, I know I’m lucky that it still works well, but I’m curious what you all have to say about it.

Honestly, it's either or, but in the half dozen systems I've built over the years (starting with a PIII-800), I've only had one motherboard (ASRock 939Dual-SATAII) die on me. Of course, I've also swapped out processors on a few of those boards, simply for better performance; perhaps before the processor died.

If your CPU works, is not overclocked, and doesn't overheat, there is no reason it can't last for years, if not decades. As there are no moving parts, there is nothing to wear out. Personally, I've never had a CPU go bad, but I can't say the same for a motherboard.

In my 10+ years of IT experience, I've only seen about 2 processors fail on me. Motherboards have failed on me much more often.

I wouldn't be worried about your computer, it's already lasted 8 years without any issues.

You got lucky and got solid hardware, or your living conditions don't effect the PC at all, or you have clean power going to your rig, or all of the above even.
