I bought a 2 bay hard drive enclosure and 2 8tb baracuda hard drives. I will be using them in single mode, non raid. Should I format them before I start using them? And most importantly what format should I use?

I will be storing large 30gb video files and playing/streaming them over my nerwork.

Thank you in advance,
Shane

Hdds are typically already formatted to ntfs and if they don't automatically, all you have to do is initialize them. Mac uses hfs+ not exfat although it can use it, along with windows, exfat is what I'd suggest for flash drives. I'd suggest the other formats for hdds. If they aren't already formatted, you can do a quick format.

For an external (ie USB) drive, exFat is used for compatibility between many OS's, including MAC.

If this is a standalone NAS type device then its likely that the pre-formatting will be fine and the device playing the media won't actually care what format they are in. LoL
