need help upgrading (i'm a noob)

you can't upgrade the motherboard easily.

here are the steps:

turn off psu,
open case,
take off the cpu coooler,
pull up the cpu latch
take out the cpu,
swap cpu, (make sure you align the triangle/dot/w.e)
close the socket latch.
clean the contacting surface of cpu cooler
apply small amount thermal paste on the cpu ihs.
install the cpu cooler.
turn on power and see if it boots.
once getting into the os, check for temperature to be reasonable.
turn off pc.
assemble the case.
you are done.

I suggest you look at Phenom II X4 CPUs. You want a quad core for best results, that rules out the X2s. Nothing you do will really use 6 cores on a Phenom II these days, so that rules out the X6s. If possible, get the X4 with the fastest clock speed, since this generation of CPUs performs much better as the clock speeds go up. Don't forget it has to be a 95W CPU, not a 125W CPU.
