Just got my GTX 1060 6GB GPU and i've noticed something. The fans only seems to run if i have MSI Afterburner open (while idle). I actually just read someone else's thread and found out that this cards fans are designed to stay off until it hits 60C. But is there a way to keep the fans spinning without having Afterburner open, or is it pointless to have them on until 60C? I would just assume that keeping the card as cool as possible at all times would be best, i dont really care about the noise.

Ah well GPU Tweak II might have an option to toggle between a gaming mode and silent mode on startup where in gaming mode the fans turn on at start up and both are saved under your custom made profile settings. I've never used that utility so I can't help there. Here's the guide though:

No the fan control profile is set in the BIOS by the card maker. You cannot change that mannually somewhere outside of a third party GPU management program like Afterburner. You can create a custom fan profile that will start spinning them up at idle, but you'll still have to manually open Afterburner up every time to enable the fan profile setting.

I learned about this a few years ago when I bought an EVGA GTX 970 SSC ACX dual-fan GPU. that had this feature. I went into panic when the fans weren't spinning while the computer was at idle. It's the only way to make it override BIOS if you want to keep your inside cool. But if you are just doing basic desktop stuff like internet, videos, and music, your GPU shouldn't be getting warm anyway even when fanless.

Yea i have a custom fan profile that it follows pretty closely while Afterburner is open, just when it is closed it no longer follows the fan curve. My card is an Asus and heard there is an option to turn that feature off with the bundled Overclock software. GPUTweak, but the UI on it is much for confusing that MSI. I intend to game on this GPU so I will need the fans working. Like i said, just wanted to keep the fans going atleast a little bit to keep them as cool as possible. Thanks for the answer

For anyone that stumbles across this thread and has the same problem, I was able to fix it by using the bundled overclock software, GPU Tweak ll, and use a custom fan profile on User 1 Mode, instead of MSI Afterburner. The fans now stay on even after closing the program.

Cool. That's an awesome feature. I missed that feature when I bought my 970 and last year my 1080 Ti (I didn't and still don't use their Precision X but nice to know it's in there too). I guess at some point these motherboard makers got tired of complaints and finally added a bypass and turn fans on option from bootup in their utility.
