Can I add different RAM to current set?

I need more RAM for my gaming machine as it's using up 7.4 GB of my current 8 GB of memory. However the current set I have is a set ofKingston ValueRAM 2x4 GB DDR4 DIMM @ 2133MHz. I've always been told to get identical set of RAM if expanding but unfortunately these sets have expired and I'm not sure whether this is still valid advice.

Question is now if I need to buy a new set of 16 GB or if I can add 8 GB of a different set of RAM?
Also, does brand really matter whether it be HyperX, Crucial, Kingston etc and is it better to get 2x8 GB than 4x4 GB?

Even the exact same make and model are not guaranteed to work if not bought as part of a kit. I have 2 sets of 2x4gb Corsair Vengence LP 1600mhz CL9 that will not run stable together at their rated speed, if I want to use them in the same system I have to underclock and overvolt them.

Now mixing RAM can be ok, it’s a gamble. If you do try mixing get the same size, frequency & latency modules to stand the best chance of it working.
