Can i overclock i5 6600k on a ASRock Super Alloy B150M-HDS?

Solution
No, to overclock a Skylake or Kaby lake K cpu you need a Z series board(Z170 or Z270). The B150 boards aswell as the H110, H170, B250 and H270 boards do not support overclocking.

8gb is currently considered the minimum you want for a gaming rig.

Whether or not the board has "gaming" in it's model name or not has nothing to do with overclocking. Putting "gaming" in a motherboards model name is simply marketing. There are a few "gaming" motherboards that do not even support CPU overclocking.

That motherboard isn't really made for overclocking so I wouldn't, the only boards that support overclocking and that CPU are the Z170/Z270 boards. Another thing which is odd is that the seller states they are running DDR3 when the board only supports DDR4. For the price, at least in USD, imho isn't worth it as they don't state the PSU model and a few other details.

Since you are buying a new system, it doesn't make sense to buy an already outdated processor & motherboard. The Intel Core i5-8600K is the equivalent current processor. It is also approximately the same price. That is my suggestion. The i5-7600k (although not as current) would also be a better choice and it is also about the same price as the i5-6600k.

I have a question. You state none of these types of motherboard motherboards can be used to overclock CPU. Then why are there Tom's Hardware articles stating otherwise.

Here are three articles discussing exactly that. The last article is specifically about the B150.

" Because hardware modifications are required to enable overclocking on non-Z170 chipsets, unless a motherboard OEM explicitly states that the system has this feature, you should not expect overclocking capabilities on non-Z170 chipsets"

Intel also in the 2 yrs since that was published killed this with micro code updates. The non-z overclocking boards were rare because Intel did not want them to exist, I can't remember ever even seeing one for sale.

I didn't make the case that this was a great overclocking motherboard. I did the opposite. But I do remember articles about overclocking without the multipliers when the K processors first came on market.

Blanket statements only need one exception to make them invalid.

You could OC on non-Z boards in the past, by modifying BCLK. But right now, in this point in time, you can't OC any CPU on B150 board if you use any recent BIOS version. OP was not asking about the past, he wants answer valid for today. Two years old articles are not going to give you the answer for today.

What processor was the OP discussing? It was a i5-6600k. That CPU was launched in 2015. The motherboard is from 2015. The last BIOS for the motherboard is from 2016. There were similar motherboards from Asus and MSI. Your argument fails from every perspective. I advised against the motherboard, but overclocking a B150 motherboard has been done.

Bull.

You said,
You can't OC any CPU on B150 motherboard, only Z motherboards (Z170 or Z270) allow CPU overclocking. Also, your setup needs cooler, as 6600K is not shipped with one.

That statement was not correct.

There are even You Tube videos showing it being done like this one.

Are you not realizing that boards come with updated bioses? If it's still on the original bios (which got patched extremely quickly so the chance is highly unlikely) then sure some mild oc is possible but not with the stock cooler. Otherwise no.

As said before, I am not advocating for this motherboard. I am saying that the statement that overclocking isn't possible is false (you just said so yourself). The last BIOS download available for the motherboard is from 2016. Also the video above got a non-K chip on a B150 to 4GHz.
