Hi, There!

Can anybody help me.
I founded info that Gygabyte Gaming series can run system with i9 and 512Gb ECC R-DIMM

Here is from official site - https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X299-AORUS-Gaming-3-rev-10#sp
____________________________________________________________________
* Support for up to 512 GB of system memory when using Registered DIMMs.
* Supported when using a 44-lane or 28-lane CPU (6-core or above).

Support for Registered DIMM 1Rx8/2Rx8/1Rx4/2Rx4 memory modules (operate in non-ECC mode)
* R-DIMM is only supported by BIOS version F7 and earlier versions.

How does it possible because on the Inel ARC site i9 have no support ECC RAM.
My direct message to support of Gygabyte keep strong and deep silence.

I confused just one thing than i9 not support R-DIMM but on Gigabyte site is support. I just want have a Confidence to buy i 512GB and run it with i9. I have no money to buy XEON it`s too much money. i9 that i want 7940x cost - 1400$ + 512GB RAM cost 4000$, XEON W for 2066 socket -cost 7000$ and it`s slow in 3d rendering. Price from Russia (I`m from Russia).

Why Gigabyte keep silence of my question... I don`t know.

I checked the specs and you are correct; if you want 512 GB or RDIMM support, then you need a Xeon processor. The i9-7940x can support up to 128 GB of UDIMM memory. I also checked the memory QVL and no 64GB module is certified, let alone 8 modules. The largest module is 32GB in 4 sockets.

Gigabyte probably are not getting back to you because they are dropping RDIMM support which obviously isn't ideal for a gaming motherboard. Since you need a Xeon to support 512 GB, then get a motherboard that will fully meet your requirements. I presume this is for business use and the additional cost may be justified.

It`s mean that Gigabyte wrote i wrong information about this mobo about supporting 512GB in F7 version BIOS with i9 (there is no XEONS in CPU support page only i9 and i7). In support page u can see BIOS version and F7 support RDIMM but in new version - not.

Damn It`s not funny It`s look like a fraud or BIG mistake about this compatibility with i9 and 512GB. My be I have I wired logic but conclusion after reading info on gigabyte site that i9 can support 512Gb.

It looks like Gigabyte supported RDIMM on their X299 platforms, but it officially isn't supported by Intel and it doesn't make much sense since they operate in non-ECC mode. RDIMM support has been removed from all their X299 motherboards (Intel may have asked Gigabyte to remove it).

Based on available info, it looks like RDIMM will work, but since it was removed from all their X299 motherboards, you can't expect much support from Gigabyte if there are issues and you won't be able to upgrade the BIOS to resolve them.

You are very lucky to find 64GB RDIMM modules for $500 a piece because they usually are much more expensive than that.

I`ve got an official answer from Gigabyte support:

*** translated from russian***

Good day!

Thank you for using our products and for contacting GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY technical support.

The possibility of using 512GB of memory was available on earlier BIOS versions (theoretical possibility of using CPU and motherboard in undocumented modes), in the latest BIOS versions this feature is disabled (R-DIMM modules are not supported from F8c version).

With Respect and Best Regards,
GIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY

Will you still buy it or instead get a motherboard and CPU that fully support 512 GB? - Yes, I steel. There is no reasons to buy Xeon to 513GB Gigabyte say It`s Ok. I have to try it in summer. Very unstable situation in world political games - price grow up =(

Fyi even if its a little bit older...

I can confirm that the Asus WS X299 Sage "can" run ECC Memory with the first Bios release.
As soon as you update the Bios it will lose the feature of using ecc ram in non ecc mode.

I do not know how stable this is but at least its a lie from Intel that X299 dont support ECC or 256GB to sell that expensive low clocked Xenon crap.

Hi! Thank U very much!

Last 2 days I tested Asus X299 WS PRO with 256 GB RAM and the don`t see they (R-DIMM) but in SAGE all right. I think in SAGE other architecture of soldering elements of way lines between CPU and RAM (but) I tested WS PRO with 7820X (Maybe i9 really support more RAM)

Bios 0402 is the latest i could get the ECC Ram to work.
The Bios recognizes 256GB, Windows aswell but sadly Windows reserves 70GB for Hardware so its only possible to use 185GB, the rest is wasted.
I think its a limitation in the Chipset or the Processor i9.

Did you bother testing if ECC actually worked/functioned properly in your motherboard?
It's one thing to be able to use ECC ram (as non-ECC) and another to actually have it using the parity bit.

The last time I did research on this for my own home server, the selection of motherboards that actually implemented full ECC support was very limited outside of server boards. If you look at my first reply to Viacheslav Ilinskiy, IMO there was no point in spending extra for ECC ram when all the motherboard was going to do is use it as regular cheaper non-ECC ram.

popatim for me no matter ECC mode (it worls only on server and with special soft can be shows that ECC work). After 9 jan I have to plane to test my mobo with 256 but with 9960X.

mmolletit reserves 70GB - Do u talk about Virtual memory?

no its reserved hardware memory which cant be used in Windows 10 Pro / Workstation or Windows Server 2019. Tried both.
Dont know whats the issue, Windows sees 256GB Memory but reserves 70GB for whatever. Btw. the Mainboard i used exploded nearby the rams ;)

and of course there is no ecc support in skylake-x, its not about ecc here, its about using RDIMM which has more capacity.
