It depends. Many modern boards actually have a TRRS 4-Pole 3.5mm (unlabelled as such) jack in place of the 'normal' 3.5mm jack. Outwardly, they look identical, but the former is able to handle the extra channel required for microphone use in a single jack. This allows you to use a mic/sound combo out of a single jack. They just don't label it that way.

Then there's the boards that simply do not support 4-Pole (TRRS) jacks which means you need a y adapter to separate them into their appropriate outputs.

If your computer is relatively new, give it a try in just the headphone jack. You may well be able to use just that, as it may well be the 4-Pole TRRS variant of the jack. I know I can on my PC from about 11 months ago. You'll want to make sure your sound drivers are up to date though. Realtek, for instance, makes it extremely obvious if you get Mic and sound out of a jack when you plug it in.
