I have just aquired an R9 290 4GB edition.

However, in game the VRAM usage never passes 2GB. Which was what it was for my previous R9 285 2GB edition.

CPU-Z says the new card DOES have 4 GB.

So, why am I only seeing 2GB in MSI Afterburner display?

The card seems to fuction well, it's bench score is way higher than my old 285, and in game FPS are way higher too.

Interestingly, I did update the drivers using Radeon settings (didnt delete anything manually). Although, I'm not sure I needed to as the R9 200 series all appear to share the same.

Current driver is Adrenelin 18.3.4.

Any ideas, please?

Thanks.

Solution

Uninstall your drivers (preferabbly with the ddu program). Then reinstall.

Ok, so I downloaded DDU and uninstalled the drivers. Rebooted and re installed fresh drivers.

Again, performance is fine. I am running Witcher 3 at Ultra almost everything 1080p at 60fps.

Yet, MSI on screen (RivaTuner) is saying 1048Mb memory! AGain, CPU-Z says 4GB.

Here is my spec.

CPU: AMD FX 8370 @4.65MHz (21.5 x 215.7)
MOBO: M5A99FX PRO 2.0
GPU: R9 290
PSU: 850W Gold (Can find exact model if needed)
RAM: 16GB @ DRAM 862.9MHz
NB Freq 2588MHz

Well, it appears as if the issue is related to Witcher 3.

Railway Empire greedily took all 4GB of memory in no time! However, for some reason, Witcher 3 seems to only use 2GB max. Mostly it sits around the 1.2 mark, which is very odd. My last card, the 285 (with much lower settings) used all of its 2GB's.

Any thoughts?
