My Epson Stylus photoR1800 has just told me 'Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service ...see your printer documentation' Does this mean it is effectively a write off? And if so what would you replace it with?

Yes...oh dear...my email on my PC is not showing and on my tablet I can't see what I am writing! Life is not good at the moment. My problem is that all my prints rely on carefully documented settings...so I guess I will have to stake all on it being repairable. I have been looking at printers all day...mine is pigment based inks and although they can be a pain, they are very good for what I do which is pictures. Every one is carefully proofed.
Thanks anyway. But I will look into Cannon. What a pain it can be when things go wrong. Cheers, Julia

Now I discover that Epson no longer make the Ink pads for the R1800, that there is a CD you can buy from Ebay to reset the counter, that lots of people use a 'printer potty' outside their printers and that there are utube videos on doing it yourself...to say nothing of cleaning the print head.
Has anyone here done any of this themselves? I suspect it is full of traps for the unwary.
Just asking...
And has any artist here found a difference in effect between dye based inks and pigment based inks? I know dye based are less likely to clog but at what price to the actual ptint?
Thanks anyone who has the time to answer.
