Ryzen 1600 + gtx 1060 6gb or i5 8400 + gtx 1060 6gb for gaming ?

Hello, everyone could help me? I have to choice between a pc with ryzen 1600 and gtx 1060 6gb which costs about 600£ and i could buy it now or a pc with i5 8400 and gtx 1060 6gb which i could buy it in 2 weeks and costs 750£.

Assuming 1080p 60htz screen they'll homestly both perform the same.

No way an i5 8400 build is worth £150 more unless it comes with a lot of extras.

The CPU's are virtually the same price at the minute.

Ryzen refresh coming in April end. A 2600 gives you about 10% improvement in performance and is unlocked for overclocking. Imo, I see no other sensible alternative at that price point.

Btw I saw that i5 8400 gets 10-20 fps more than ryzen 1600 in gaming, which is my main priority.

@Lucky - Id agree but a working build with a ryzen 1600 & 1060 6gb for £600 is a good buy.

Cpu & gpu alone come to over £400 retail cost wise.

@XHYPED - true the i5 offers more straight fps.

Ryzens top out is around 100fps, the i5 may hit 110-120 on the same title.unless youre running a 100htz+ screen though those differences are entirely irrelevant.

Well, a Ryzen 5 1600 overclocked to about 4.0Ghz will get about the same fps as the i5 8400.

so it depends on which games you want to play

games like pubg would greatly benefit from the i5 for example

the vast majority of online games only use 1 - 2 cores so there again the i5 would yield much better results

also you can expect a "i7 9700k" to work on the z370 mobo given intel's track record

so future wise it is also superior upgrade path

you can also set the i5 to ~4ghz in the bios guaranteed

And is the 15 fps gap worth the extra 150£?

I mean, both the Ryzen 5 1600 and the i5 8400 cost about 150£ in my country and since Intel got their budget motherboards out, it should cost about the same to build a system with either of them.
Then the Intel would be better.
So I don't know why the gap, unless he found some deal on the Ryzen CPU.

I don't know if 15 fps is worth the extra cost. Unless he is aiming for the 144Hz mark.

the gap grows more as the 1600 falls further away from 4ghz ( the vast majority will only hit 3.6 - 3.8 ghz )

and when you set the i5 8400 to ~4ghz in the bios ( which is guaranteed )

in cpu bound games you could easily see over 20 fps gain or more, and even if you dont have a 144hz monitor this also means much better minimums and frame times so everyone benefits

not to mention when you upgrade to a more powerful gpu down the line the i5 8400 will be able to keep up

ryzen 3 is only going to be a power efficiency modification on ryzen 2 I believe?

I very much doubt they would be competitive with the next releases from intel, which will be also be compatible with the z370 platform given intel's track record

^ nah, ryzen refresh with 12nm lithography had a choice between 10% performance or power saving. AMD chose performance.

Ryzen 2 is supposedly a whole new architecture.

Given Intel's track record Id actually veer towards the next chips NOT being compatible with z370.

Im in no way disputing the i5 8400 is a good cpu - it plainly is & for straight gaming fps (if ypure running a 144htz screen) it will push more fps, whether it will push better minimuma & frametimes is debatable depending on title .

The fact remains , if the component list is directly comparable then there is no way on this planet that its worth paying £150 extra for an i5 8400 , these build should be within £20-30 either way.

That's exactly what I'm saying.
Where I live, both platforms cost about the same.
In this case, the Intel will be the better choice.

But the price difference is too big for CPUs that perform roughly the same.
And with OC you can close the gap.

In this specific scenario, the Ryzen 5 1600 is the better value. Or even better, get the Ryzen 5 2600.
