just shutdown then make sure you disconnect pc from power source, remove the m.2 ssd then just install the heatsink then install the ssd back to the slot then done, boot up with no problem
If you shut down and unplug...you can remove anything you want without hurting anything. Just make sure you aren't charged up with static (touch the case first).
