does higher 120~144kh screens make much a difference in games like gw2

Solution
60 to 120 or 144 is a big difference,
120 to 144 isn't huge.
FPS games tend to benefit the most, but I noticed a huge difference in how fluid games are going from a 60Hz panel to a 144Hz panel in FFXIV (A MMORPG like GW2), even though I can only get 90FPS in FFXIV its a heck of a lot smoother than the 60FPS I had prior.

It depends on your eyes(how good your vision is, how well they handle flashing objects/fast movement) & how close you sit to the screen. As long as your system specs help you to maintain a decent FPS, then yes it will make a difference.

now with FFXIV is it that the game isnt coded well when they did the port or are the graphics really good? thought i saw the file size as 100gb wich i often find games with large file sizes to have incredible graphics

Are you thinking FFXV? not XIV? FFXIV is much less than 100GB, and the games written very well imo

YES!
even if your graphic card doesn't produce enough fps to support the refresh rate, higher refresh rate is still better to look at.
tearing will still exist, but it sure does help eliminate a lot of em when you have higher refresh rate(without v-sync)
the fluidity of the movement especially if you have mouse with higher polling rate to match is easy on the eyes, it doesn't strain your eyes like 60hz.

i tried getting into the final fantasy series loved the original i think was nintendo or super nintindo (wich where great for there time)
i always thought the graphics werent all that good in fairly recent versions havnt played any console games nor have i played the new windows edition

then again last i checked was probably 5 years ago or so and not sure wich version was i had as i later relized there where several at the time

since you're old school gamer,
FF XV graphics is outstanding, you will need a strong graphic card to enjoy it. but story wise... meh... RPG nowadays are repetitive, too complicated, forced non-linear.
