PC won't boot with RAM sticks in dual slots

Hello guys :)

A couple of days ago, my PC stopped working. It suddenly wouldn't boot. So i tested a lot of things and nothing worked. But then i noticed that when i press the power button, CPU light flashes shortly as it should and then the DRAM light turns on, but it doesn't turn off and the pc does not boot. So i figured that my memory would be at fault, so i took out the memory and tested one stick in all DIMMS and it booted fine. I figured that none of the DIMM slots were at fault then, so i tested every DIMM with the other RAM stick and it booted just fine. Then i tested with both sticks one i DIMM 1 and one in DIMM 2, and it booted fine. Then tested in DIMM 1 and 3, booted fine. Then tested 1 and 4 and it booted fine. Then i tested 2 and 3 and it booted fine, but when i tested 2 and 4 its stuck on DRAM light and won't boot. The manual says that theese to slots are the ones to use if you only have 2 sticks of ram and i have been using them for a little over a year, but suddenly it is not working?

My mobo is MSI Z170A GAMING PRO CARBON
RAM is HyperX Fury 2133 MHz DDR4

Does anyone have a solution to this?
And can i run dual channel with other slots than 2 and 4 because then it can boot fine?

Hope anyone has a solution

best regards
Tore

Use memtest.org usb auto installer and boot from it

Are CPU socket pins of the motherboard bent or discolored?

Which CPU is it? Any hardware changed since first boot of the system?

eventually reset the BIOS (clrcmos)
eventually update the BIOS

Do you have the possibility of using other working RAM?

CPU socket pins are not bent or discolored.
I use a i7 6700K not overclocked. No hardware changes before or after it started happening.
I have tried to reset CMOS, but that doesn't work.
I don't have any other ram sticks at hand right now, but i could probably get my hands on some. But doesn't it seem unlikely that it is the RAM, because it boots fine with both sticks in all combinations except slot 2 and 4? And it boots fine with one stick in all slots, with both RAM sticks?

but how can i boot from usb with the RAM in slot 2 and 4, when it just does not display anything on the monitor at all and it is not sending input to my keyboard and mouse, because the lights in them does not turn on.
I dont even get the boot display with the RAM in thoose slots, the monitor just goes into power saving mode.
Nothing happens except DRAM LED stays on and fans are spinning, but nothing else happens.

I have tested the RAM modules i have one at a time, the PC boots fine with one module in any of the 4 slots. I does that with both of the RAM modules installed separately.

The PC also boots fine with both RAM modules installed together, UNLESS it's in slot 2 and 4 as the manual recommends if you only have 2 sticks.

I just find it very weird that it has worked for over 1 year with theese RAM modules in slot 2 and 4 and now suddenly it only works in every other possible combination, but the one that they recommend haha.. :)

I will test it when i get home from school.
But do i just download it and and boot it from a usb?

But how does it work? can it test anything when i can only boot when the RAM modules are not in the slots that is not working?

Can it test slot 2 and 4 even though the modules are in 1 and 3 for example? :)

Aah okay, makes sense!
I will get back to you when i have tested the RAM!

and thank you very much for the input so far! I appreciate it! :)

I can't really get memtest to show me anything. But tomorrow i will go and borrow a pair of working RAM modules and install them in slot 2 and 4.. If the PC boots with them, it would be my memory that is failing right? And if it doesn't boot i should try to update my BIOS and if that doesn't work i should be my mobo that is broken, am i right? :)

Okay. I tried memtest and i could not get it to test anything unfortunable.

But i went and bought a new pair of ram modules and i installed them in the dual slots and it booted right away. Then i updated my BIOS to the lastest version and tried installing my old ram modules in the dual slots and now it boots with them aswell.. so im kinda confused?? If it was a BIOS problem, how could it possibly boot right away with the new ram modules?? And if it was my memory, how can it possibly work with the old ram modules now after the BIOS update??

It doesn't make any sense to me haha

Check your power supply, I had the same problem you described where the computer would not boot with 4 DIMMs. It started with BIOS errors saying the RAM had changed, as 2 DIMMs would no longer register. The OS also became corrupted and would not boot. Auto Repair went around in circles and would not boot cleanly into the OS. I swapped out all 4 DIMMS and the problem continued, suggesting either MOB or PSU, but not MEMORY. I replaced the PSU (Low end SHAW PSU with a better ANTEC PSU. Same MEMORY and MOB, no problems. I also monitored the PSU using the MSI Control Centre utility and all three voltages that were tracked were jittery. The ANTEC voltages look much more stable as well. So check your PSU.
