Question about upgrading from i3 7100 to i5 7400

Hi Everyone, well, i recently upgraded from an AMD setup to a 7th gen i3 (7100) and that's OK, i've been using i3 before trying AMD and it has a good performance, although i'm willing to upgrade it again, but i'm not really sure if that would be a good upgrade if i choose the i5 7400 (that's actually my choice because of the budget, here in Brazil things are quite expensive).

My actual configs are:

i3 7100
h110m hg4
8gb RAM
r9 380 OC

I would appreciate to have some tips on what's the best for me to upgrade now, this config its really recent (about 3 months), but i'm going to try selling the i3 or whatever if i buy a new hardware.

My usage is mainly for working (Photoshop in most of the time, AFX, Ilustrator and Hitfilm), i use it for games too, but that's not my main intention here (plus 70% of the games i play don't ask for a super PC).

PS: here's my site for those who want to check my type of work www.tulliusheuer.com

I think that's an important information: i use 3 screens, one has 720p, other 1080p and another has 2560x1440.

Sorry about any english mistakes and thanks in advance.

I'd wait.
You would benefit from either an I5(somewhat) or an I7, but if you're actually OK with the 7100's current performance, I wouldn't worry about it.
The 7400 wouldn't show a noticeable gain in everything, as far as work is concerned.
i think the 7400 would be a decent upgrade for your type of work since it has 4 pure cores unlike the i3 7100 which has 2 pure cores with hyperthreading. you shouldn't have to worry about motherboard compatibility if you do decide to upgrade.

for your type of work though the ideal upgrade would be the i7 7700K because it has 4 cores with a total of 8 threads because of hyperthreading but that CPU is probably way out of your budget.

Yeah, the i7 7700k more kind of 100% more expensive here. I tried to search for some benchmarks and reviews of i3 vs i5 and o couldn't find anything that convinces me to upgrade it yet, so i decided to try asking for more advanced users.

You mean wait for a better upgrade in the future?

Well, i'm not sure about this i5 7400 because of the reviews i've seen, it seems to be a better CPU, but not that much, i don't really know if it worth spending money now. Maybe an used one would worth it.

Do you have any suggestion that can give me a better performance overall in the config instead of changing the CPU?

for your needs the other alternative would be to increase your ram to at least 16GB

Yes, that's what I meant.
7400 really isn't that much of an upgrade over what you already have. The 7700, definitely - but it's out of budget. A used 7400 isn't going for much cheaper, from what I can see.
How about the used 7700's? https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B01N0L41N7/ref=dp_olp_all_mbc?ie=UTF8&condition=all

Yeah i thought that would be a good alternative, since 8gb is kind of in the limit hehe.

Maybe it's a good idea, but i think i'll go with you and wait a bit more to pick a new one in a good price on a near future, i'm now heading to upgrade just the RAM for now!

Thanks for the tips!
