its not a dumb question. i have searched and found 2 answers. 1. max 4gb 2. 3 gb.
one guy said 3gb because my pc is 32bit operating system. thats why it wont support 4gb. so i just wanted to make sure which one is true.

Solution
32 bit system supports maximum physcially 4gb (in total).
you operating system will see total 4 gb too,
but some addresses are reserved, so it's not available to use as system memory address. and your total available ram to be used as system memory is somewhere around 3.3 Gb
(consider you are a real estate developer, city has 4000 address, but about 700 hundred are reserved for public service.
you can build 4000 houses, but city can only give you 3300 address for you to sale, you can't sell house without a proper address)

which means, if you plug 4 gb ram, only 3.3 (roughly), but if you plug 3 gb, you get 3 gb.
Post your system model number or search your model at www.memorystock.com

32Bit OS can recognize up to 4GB RAM, out of which 2GB to 3.75GB will be usable depending on the memory sharing between hardware devices. So it can support up to 4GB but memory left for the user will be less.
