I have a laptop made for playing games. Processor: Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core Processor (6MB Cache, 2.8GHz-3.8GHz) 45W
RAM: 32GB RAM DDR4 2400MHz | Hard Drive: 512GB NVMe Solid State Drive + 2TB 5400rpm Hard Disk Drive
Keyboard: Steel Series Full-color backlight with Anti-Ghost key+ Silver lining | Operating System: Windows 10 x64
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce Max-Q 1070 8GB GDDR5 | Display: 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) 120Hz 3ms 94% NTSC Display. I get very high framerates on the laptop itself but when i use the hdmi 2.0 i only get 60 fps on my brand new monitor. My laptop doesnt come with a DP port or a DVI port so would a HDMI port to DP port Work? Is there anyway to raise the framerate of the monitor?

it doesnt allow me to change the display settings even though it is a 144 hz monitor. Does using an hdmi 2.0 make that not possible?

The monitor i have is a MSI mag24c ( https://www.msi.com/Monitor/Optix-MAG24C ) which says it allows for 144 hz. I have a nvidia gtx 1060 6gb ram in my laptop. my laptop also has a hdmi port capable of supporting 4k @ 60hz which could be hdmi 2.0. i dont know if i have to allow my graphics card to allow high frame rates (mine are capped at 60 fps on the monitor). I dont know if i need to change anything or if i should just switch to using the thunderbolt 3 port to display port.

Follow this guide and tell me if it is set to 144hz already.

Follow section 6 of the guide I linked before, which describes how to set up 120+ Hz.
