Upgrading to 8th gen from 6th gen CPU

I currently have an ASUS H170 Pro (not GAMING nor the regular H170) motherboard. I have the manual but it doesn't say anything about supporting 8th gen CPU's (obviously because 8th gen Intel CPUs didn't come out then, but it does mention BIOS updating).

I currently have an Intel i7 6700 (non-overclockable) CPU, and according to some other users on sites, I need to have a 6th gen CPU to update the BIOS to support 7th gen processors, then a 7th gen processor to update the BIOS to support 8th gen processors.

I am not sure if my motherboard supports 8th Gen CPU's, or I'll have to buy a new motherboard. I'm also not sure if I can "skip" a BIOS update so I don't have to acquire a 7th gen to let it support 8th gen CPU's.

Sure I've been in the BIOS before but never touched the updating portion of it, so if anyone could help or make things clear that would be great.

Skylake, kabylake are both lga1151. CoffeeLake is also lga1151, however, the 6/7 gen lga1151 boards do not support the 2nd Gen lga1151. Currently only a 300 series board supports 8th gen cpus.

Sorry, no upgrade possible without a new mobo.

Officially, not supported. In reality, there is a way that’s been floating around january, but you have serious fire risk in it. So I’m strongly against it, get a new 3xx board, z370 or the newly released H370/Q370/b360/h310 ...

People have got coffee lake working on 100/200 series LGA 1151 mobos? Do you have a link?

It'll work, with modifying the bios and some microcode changes, but it's flawed, do forget it exists. No integrated gpu and pcie is dead. But it'll boot.

Well that sounds just peachy, along with the possibility of a fire. Just buy a new board. If you don't plan on overclocking there are now(finally)plenty of options for cheap motherboards. Just an example: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813145064

If you have no plan to update to coffee lake the updating to a motherboard that will not work makes no sense.
