Getting my DVD's attention

Hello! I have a Lenovo T40 laptop with a DVD/CD drive (D). Lately, it does not seem to want to do anything. I can't get it to open when I push the button or do the Eject from within My Computer. If I load a data Disk, it does not bother to read it and if I load a music CD it does not know it exists. Occasionally it will work for me but I am wondering if it is being blocked off by some program that is running. Any thoughts on how to test if the hardware is working?

Only way to test it is to try a known good one in the system or test yours in another system, see what works where.

I doubt it's blocked, way more likely it's a physical issue and it needs to be replaced. They are like $5-10 on the used market.

Thanks! I wanted to verify if that was the only (Best) way to fix the problem. I found one on Ebay that is not too expensive.
