Almost all games are lagging. Bottleneck? gtx 980 154440

I've recently installed far cry 5 and it runs fine for 5-10 minutes until I get lagspikes/stuttering when looking at sertain things or moving to much/fast.

This happens to GTA 5 aswell.

I've re-installed windows, re-installed my drivers, unparked my cpu, changed powerplan.

My setup: gtx 980, 154440, 8gb ram, motherboard = z97-s0d(something), 400w psu,

Well the guy made a bad recommendation. 500W is the minimum for a GTX 980 says nVIDIA. That's a high power card. But that's more of a caution than the cause of this issue because if your PSU was...

I'd download and run OCCT to get your peak CPU and GPU temps. If either is too high it can cause thermal throttling which in turn causes FPS drops.

400W PSU is not enough for that system. I would replace it with a 550W unit.

Thanks for the reply! The temps are around 50-60 celsius on far cry 5 (idk if that's too high or too low).
It might be the psu, but the guys at my local pc store said it would be just enough for my setup and I don't wanna take the risk of wasting my money on a new one if that isn't the issue.

But that's more of a caution than the cause of this issue because if your PSU was failing the system would be crashing. Just saying I'd recommend replacing it ASAP because it eventually will fail as it's overloaded.

I overlooked that you had an i5-4440 because it was 154440 and wasn't sure what that meant. CPU bottleneck could explain this issue as well. Your GPU is a lot stronger than your CPU and Far Cry 5 is demanding. Upgrading the CPU to something like a overclocked 4790k would help with that but it would be much better to move to a newer platform like Intel 8th gen and bringing the graphics card over because it's still decent.

My cpu is hitting the limit of 100% aswell as interacting with stuff in the game causes it to lag.
Since I'm forced to buy a new cpu, which one should I buy and what psu should I buy to match both the gpu and the cpu?
Thanks :)

You can look at the 4770, 4790, 4770k or 4790k. This is the cheapest option but if you want to move to a stronger modern platform then you need a new cpu/motherboard/RAM. Personally I would consider moving to a modern platform and running an i5 8400/8600k or Ryzen 1600 A’s Id expect this to maximise the time until another upgrade is needed.

If you do want to only upgrade the processor I would not consider it unless you plan on overclocking it. The stock 4790k isn't dramatically better than the 4440 and only has a HT and clock speed advantage. If you don't want to overclock I'd do a full rebuild to Intel 8th gen like the Core i5 or i7. i5 8400 is good for non overclockers. With 8th gen you'd need a new motherboard and RAM. You also really need a new PSU as well.

So the best option for both my rig and my wallet is to buy an 4440 or 4790k?
I don't want to overclock. I just want to buy a cpy and psu. :)

Would Fractal Design Integra M 550W be a good psu for 4790?

A 4790k starts at around $250 USD on eBay. That and a decent PSU will be around $300 in total. I'd see if you can find the chip cheaper somewhere like Craigstlist. At $300 I personally would just go all out and move to 8th gen with a decent PSU but that's just me.

If you aren't overclocking that PSU will work although it is a lower quality unit.
