Serious Wi-Fi slowdowns on Laptop

So a friend of mine just got a new laptop I recommended but we're noticing that every now and then the Wi-Fi speeds drop drastically down to the kilobits per second.

For example, we'll be watching a video online using about 10mbps at times but then it will go through periods where we can't get any more than 6kbps. This only happens sometimes but the slowdowns are so bad they make large downloads take hours and videos buffer non-stop. I've tested to see if it happens on my own laptop when i'm connected to the same Wi-Fi but it seems to just be her laptop that experiences these slowdowns.

I have noticed that if you open a new web page the speeds jump back up for both the new web page and for the original page/video but it might only fix it for a few seconds.

Anyone else had this problem?

Solution
Have you checked the services running on the laptop? Something might be taking all the network, when watching videos (or whatever you are doing) try having the performance manager or task manager open. If you use task manager sort by network usage.

EDIT: Also scanning for viruses never hurts.
