Hi All

I am currently running on an older gaming rig. AMD 8630 CPU, Crosshair V Formula-Z mobo, 16GB DDR3 in a full tower case.

I am looking to rebuild into a smaller rig with a good amount of power. I had been looking at the Enthoo Evolv Shift-X as a base. I had also been looking into Ryzen for a CPU. After a lot of reading and looking at reviews I have become less sure of what direction I want to go. I know I want that case. Beyond that...

TL: DR: I am looking to spend about $1000 on a new system. I will for sure need: CPU, CPU Cooler, MoBo, RAM, Power Supply, Case. I have SSD's and HDD's, an external optical drive and a GTX 1070.

What do you all think?

You could save some money on either by going with the 1600 on the first build and the 8600K on the second build. There's also the option of a non K Intel CPU and non overclocking board which will save some cash.

Any preference on AMD/Intel for gaming? Any standout reasons for that preference? Also those lists lined up pretty close with that I was thinking.

Another question but does the speed of the RAM make a huge difference in gaming?

For gaming I prefer performance per core and Intel leads in that aspect so Intel would be the way to go. As for RAM speeds it can make a noticeable difference for AMD Ryzen (up to 20 FPS) for gaming but not nearly as much for Intel (2-3 FPS). I just went with the faster RAM in both builds as the price was ok for the speed.
