I want to get a geforce gtx 1070 but it says it supports a pci Express 3.0 and my motherboard has a pci express 2.0. Can I still put the gtx 1070 in it?
Does pci slots matter?

It will fit in any PCI-E x16slot.
But the motherboard must have a UEFI bios for 10 series cards to boot.

Incorrect about mobos needing to be uefi for uefi gpus to work. Uefi gpus do run on legacy bios and many are on lga 775 and 1366 platforms.
Running non uefi gpus (Gtx 5xx / 6xx series for example) on an uefi Windows install is the problem and will black screen.

On most aftermarket motherboards you get bios updates and support support. But a lot OEM boards,the largest portion of the computers in homes today, will not boot and show a black screen when a Nvidia 10 series card is used with a legacy bios.
Never had a problem running 400,500, or 600 series cards on aftermarket UEFI bios boards.

True, there is a chance legacy oem boards wont work i agree, its trial and error, wont know for sure. Uefi ready gpu support began in the 7 series GTX so possibly bios updates were offered for compatibility. Some makes needed secure boot disabled
Uefi motherboards running older gen non uefi cards required a priority boot in legacy mode for the two bios's to communicate.
