Is the ASROCK Z77 Extreme4 compatible with the GTX 1070?

Hi helpful people,
I previously had a Gigabyte GTX 670 installed in my ASROCK Z77 Extreme4 motherboard (With an i7 3770k) and figured it was time for any upgrade on the GPU first since the CPU is still moderately decent. After researching, everything I could see said that the Z77 Extreme4 would support any PCIe 3.0 Graphics card as that is a standardized port. So I purchased a Gigabyte GTX 1070 and installed it. However, the Motherboard is not recognizing that anything is plugged into the PCIe ports (2 or 3, I tried both). The graphics card is receiving power (have a Thermaltake Toughpower 750w) as it lights up but for some reason the motherboard is not recognizing it at all. I have to use the onboard graphics ports to get any output. When I go into the BIOS, and use the viewer, it says that the port the card is plugged into is empty. As mentioned above, I tried both the PCIe 2 and PCIe 3 ports on the motherboard and both have the same issue. I tested the graphics card in a friends computer and the 1070 card does work. I've also updated the BIOS to the newest version I could find, a beta version 2.90P from 2017, as well as reset the CMOS. None of those fixed the issue. I put the GTX 670 back in and it's recognized and works (I'm using it right now). Is the Z77 Extreme4 motherboard compatible with the GTX 1070? If so, how do I get it to recognize the card? Thanks for your help.

After the first time it didn't register, I used DDU to uninstall the drivers and it still didn't register afterwards. I tried again later with new drivers after I made sure the 670 was still working, again nothing. It doesn't even display anything if the hdmi cord is hooked up to the 1070, had to be hooked up to onboard to get anything to display. This is what makes me think it's at a motherboard level as the motherboard just doesn't seem to even register that the card is plugged in to it.

Could be labeled as igpu multimonitor in North Bridge Configuration. I doubt this is the case but give it a try. There in no compatibility issue between Z77 ex 4 and any video card. Your problem is kind of unique taking into account the 1070 is actually functional. How old is your psu? Try another if you have spare.

iGPU Multi-monitor was enabled in the BIOS and so I disabled it. Still nothing coming from the 1070 card :(. Strangely enough, if I plug the HDMI into the onboard it still outputs through that even with Primary set to PCIe and iGPU Multimonitor disabled in the BIOS.

My Power Supply is brand new. It's 750w Thermaltake Toughpower Gold.

Edit: I've also just tried changing the PCIE2 Link Speed (the PCIe port it's installed into at the moment) to Gen 1 through Gen 3 respectively with no luck

It should work as I had that exact combo until a month ago.

Go into bios and load the defaults. Save and restart.

If that doesnt help then power down, unplug fom wall, pull the battery, and hold the case power button in for several seconds.

Lastly, just because the psu is new doesn’t mean its operating correctly. Do you have a different set of pcie cables to try or different spots to plug in on the psu? Looks like it only has two.

Tried both the load to defaults and removing the battery. No luck. The card isn't telling me it has any power issues (has a little light near the power connector that lights up according to the Gigabyte website if there are issues and it's not lit up or flashing). I did try the other set of cables and the other port on the Power supply though and also no go :(. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I had a chat with NVIDIA Live support and they said that the issue is my BIOS is set to Legacy mode and I need to change it to UEFI mode. I'm having a look through the BIOS settings but not sure what to change. From a Google search it appears I might have to reinstall windows to be able to change this?

I was thinking that you are currently in a beta bios, but you said that the card was not recognized also through your previous bios, correct? Do you get any beep code errors from the motherboard? Do the effort and use different video output ports/cables in gpu and monitor to rule out this too. Maybe you should also ask Asrock about this. Hope someone kicks in and gives an idea cause i am really curious what may be wrong here

Edit: Take your friend's psu which was posting the 1070, to rule out the psu too

Yeah, I had my BIOS on the latest non-beta build while doing all my initial testing. However, this BIOS was from 2013. I then noticed an official Beta BIOS from 2017 and installed that hoping it would solve the issue. I don't get any beep codes, or error codes displaying on the motherboard readout. Last night I tried all the ports on the Graphics card (HDMI, Display Port, and DVI) in both the PCIE 2 and PCIE 3 slots (PCIE 1 is the mini port). I also tried both power cables and power ports on the PSU. I also had the friend bring his PSU over and we hooked that up and tested it as well. Alas nothing seems to have worked. Card lights up, fans turn on after a short while, no power supply warning lights on the card, just nothing recognized as being plugged in by the BIOS and no video output through the card at all. I have sent in tickets to both ASROCK and Gigabyte, but have yet to hear anything back as they don't have live support. I chatted some more with Nvidia live support and they feel like it may be the card is somehow partially defective even though it worked on another system. They say any system that can use the 670 should also be able to recognize and use the 1070 (which makes sense with what I read before buying the card). So I think next step is I'm going to see if I can test the card in another system somehow (maybe a local repair shop or something) and then try and get a replacement. I'm honestly out of ideas (and patience) on things to try at this point.

zomg please tell me you figured this out; I am having the exact same problem. I have a zotac 1070 in my ASRock z77 extreme 4 mobo. And while it worked fine for about 2 months it is now behaving exactly like yours. I put my old 970 in and it seems to be working flawlessly. I put the 1070 in my wifes amd machine and it works flawlessly. Its like the 1070 and the z77 dont like each other....

hmm that doesn't sound to good, i too had weird issues. I just got a new EVGA 1070ti(from ATI HD 7900) and right off the bat. The mobo(z77 extreme4) was not able to detect the Video Card. Checked the BIOS and everything is default(i did disable the igt something option). Had to use built in Intel video to be able to see the desktop, downloaded latest 1070ti software and shutdown the system.(removed my old ATI Drivers)(existing OS windows, no re-imaged/fresh installed OS)

I did some initial removal/re-seating of the video card no luck... did a try a different PCIE slots and still no luck. Placed the card back to the original PCIE slot and restarted windows for the 4th time and checked, under control panel/device manager/display adapter and finally see a windows basic video driver(the first 3 times of troubleshooting i only saw Intel Graphics). i quickly installed the Nvidia drivers and check the physical HW... the fans are not moving... (T.T). So i set up my dual screen monitor and reboot.

Quickly download the evga precision and ran the the quick 15-20min OC test... it passed and gave me a slightly OC'ed settings. Temp didn't go above 69-70'degrees(Dual Fans are turning now, as they should). Will be monitoring for the time being, this has been a very rocky start. Will update this post over the weekend. Will be doing more testing/gaming.
