Display/mouse/keyboard unresponsive after waking up from sleep, CTRL+ALT+DEL works.

Good morning,

I've always come to Tom's Hardware to find solutions to the issues I might be experiencing, however the issue I've come across now I can't find anywhere else. I hope someone here can offer some help.

I just bought a new gaming desktop (Alienware) and a new screen (HP Omen 25). The computer itself works without flaws. I installed all the latest drivers and all the latest windows updates.

The issue arises when the monitor goes into sleep mode (I've ruled out that it's windows sleep mode causing my problem, because it also happens when just the monitor goes into sleep mode)

When the monitor goes into sleep mode, I am able to wake it up by using either my mouse or my keyboard. But once the monitor wakes up (displaying my desktop), my mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. I can't move the cursor. I can't type anything (I had it go to sleep mode with Word open last time to check), I can't pull up the windows menu by pressing the windows button on my keyboard. I can't even turn on/off caps lock or num lock. However, funny enough, CTRL+ALT+DEL is responsive and it will bring me to the screen where I can either sign out/lock/task manager. Now the mouse and keyboard do work! If I start task manager, it goes back to the desktop, launches Task Manager, but the mouse and keyboard are unresponsive once again.

The only "workaround" is signing out and signing back in. I know I could turn off sleep mode for both windows and the screen, but that's just a bandaid and does not fix the underlying issue.

I've tried pretty much all solutions I could find, tweaking the power settings, etc., but nothing seems to work.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Seeing that you're on Windows 10, you may want to:
1| See if you're on the latest BIOS update.
2| See if a repair install changes anything for you.

I would advise you to uninstall your existing drivers and reinstall the latest found off Nvidia/AMD's support site. You didn't state the model of your unit thus the generically stated support site(s).

Hi Lutfij,

Thank you for your response and moving the thread to the right section, I wasn't sure where it should go. I did forget to give more info on the unit.

The unit model is an Alienware Aurora R7, specs are;

Windows 10 Home (64bit) English
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7K 8700K (6-Core/12-Thread, 12MB Cache, up to 4.7GHz with Intel(R) Turbo Boost Technology)
NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 1080 with 8GB GDDR5X
16GB Dual Channel DDR4 at 2666MHz (2X8GB)
256GB M.2 PCIe Solid State Drive
1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)

Monitor is connected via HDMI, not sure if that would help. I did install the latest Nvidia drivers when I got the unit, so I don't think that's the issue. Because the screen does wake up, it's the peripherals that seem partly unresponsive.

I will double check the BIOS update and see if that makes a difference. If not, I'll do a repair install.

Should I do "Refresh PC" or "Reset PC"?

Some preliminary tests have indicated that the "HP My Display" software was the culprit.

In case anyone comes across this issue, that might be what's causing it.

I uninstalled it and had it go to sleep a couple times and I haven't had the issue.

I will keep an eye on it the next couple days and post an update in case it's something else.
