Worse internet with new router

Hi, a couple of days ago my family "upgraded" our router. We got a new Technicolor with 2 SSID:s, one 2,4GHz and one 5GHz. The crazy thing is that the connection/wifi strength seems to have gotten worse!? Beforehand I was able to game/watch films very often without problems, now it lags at random hours, constantly, and I can't figure out why. It's not because there are too many people using it because it lags just as often when I'm home alone. For what it's worth we have a pretty bad internet deal, we have 12mb upload and 2mb download. It's driving me mad because I can't make sense of it, any possible answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Often times we suggest updating the routers firmware to ensure you have as less issues as possible. I can't seem to find your router's make and model listed here apart from it being by Technicolor. What was your previous router? Does your experience of content consumption change when working closer to the router?

My current router is the Technicolor TG799vac Xtream, the previous one was a zyxel p-2601hn-f1. I've found that the vicinity to the router doesn't matter. I have the same issues if I'm as far away from the router as possible inside the house just as if I'm as close as possible. I'll try updating the firmware, thanks!
