MemTest86 & CPU Heat/Fan Speed

I am running MemTest86 7.5 to test my RAM ... is it normal for the CPU fan to run at maximum speed during this test?

Solution
Memtest runs outside of the operating system, so if you normally have any fan control software running in the OS it will not do so while running Memtest. I have the same thing happen with my machine, but I run SpeedFan in Windows and have the motherboard fan controls disabled (Asus Q-Fan for example).
memtest86 is not a particularly cpu intensive process.
There is little reason for the fan to speed up very much.
What is your temperature at idle?
What is your cpu and cooler?
If you are using an intel cpu and the stock pushpin cooler, I would expect to see 10-15c. over ambient.

Thanks, idle temp is usually around 40C, CPU is the AMD A10-6800B, cooler is stock HP ... memtest86 reports the CPU is at 55C

Your motherboard bios may or may not be controlling the cpu fan speed.
If the cooler is mounted well, I would not worry.
The idle temperature will tell you that.
Sometimes, though, a user forgets to remove a mylar protective film on the cooler, or does not get the mount level.
Such an error will not let the cooler do its job.

Thanks, that makes sense, I'll have to check out speedfan too.
