i7-4790K CPU temp is 70°C while on 30% load HELP Overheating?

I am currently in lobby on fortnite while this temp is going, when im on my desktop and doing nothing it idles from 25 - 35°C. When im ingame it varies from 75 - 90°C, I recently applied new thermal paste ARTIC THERMAL COMPUND MX-2. Swabbed and cleaned old paste with alcohol until a mirror finish, applied a little dot in the middle and reapplied the fan. I upgraded to i7-4790k but still using a stock intel cpu cooler. Anyone help me, should i be worried or what actions should i do?

Solution
Definitely warm temps running stock under load with the stock Intel cooler. If you remove the cooler and see the paste if you applied the dot, it should be spread out to about 75% coverage of the CPU if you have full contact with the heat sink (most heat is generated in that area - the outer areas of the CPU don't matter as much as far as thermals but ensuring 100% coverage manually helps).

Forget the Hyper EVO 212. It is an outdated cooler now and there are better ones in similar price ranges. Look at the Cryorig H7 - that's my recommendation without going high end like say with a Noctua NH-D15. To give you an idea on temp control, I overclock my i5 4690k to 4.7GHz running a Noctua NH-D14 cooler and never see temps go above 65C...

When you say a little dot, how little? I agree, check your application. If that dot didn't spread out to cover about 85% of the heat spreader, you didn't use enough.

For Intel a narrow stripe is often recommended since the CPU itself is rectangular. Vertical alignment in a tower, left to right in a desktop when facing the front of the case. (Other orientations would be a different)

I did this already due to it beeing at 100°C the first time i applied the paste. Now it sits around 80-85 at gaming doesnt go over it, So i guess it could be just that the stock cooler isnt enough? I also just bought a new graphics card and my case air seems quite hot atm..

I just followed a guide, spread seems fine, covers everything almost to the edges except for corners obviously

The 4790k really needs a better CPU cooler than anything stock. At the very least (and cheapest) get a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO and I can tell you from experience that it will cool the 4790k a heck of a lot better than you are experiencing now. Intel may make the best CPUs (opinions may vary), but they can't make good CPU coolers to save their lives.

Im using the Intel Stock cooler: E97378-001 // CNSH4372M4 DC12V 0.28A NIDEC or something, dont know what numbers define the model. What price is it for the cooler master hyper 212 EVO? I dont even know what case i have, i want to get a new one but i dont know which one would support all my components, also only have 2 air fans atm.

Would the Noctua NH-D15S premium work? Guess i could buy that.

Excellent choice but it's much pricier than the H7. It's a quieter fan than the H7 which is two fans though if that's important. And yes all mounting hardware for your chipset is included in the box.

Thank you very much, so its safe to say im not having any problems with the cpu or thermal paste, just a cooling issue with fans? Ill upgrade it as soona s i can; theese are my stats after 10 games of fortnite:

Although it did spike to 85 at one point. seems stable

Well you can buy higher quality thermal paste but it will only drop your temps by a few C. Nothing like what you need. Your heat is on the upper end of Intel's recommended maximum temps but assuming you are running stock voltage it won't kill your temps prematurely. Voltage degrades a CPU over time much faster than heat does IF said heat is within spec.

With that said, anything above 80C is generally not recommended. This is assuming you have normal livable ambient room temperatures (24-28C) and decent air flow into (and out of) your PC case. Here's a handy tool for Intel thermal guides:

Stop using it immediately under load if those temps are accurate. Just for a second opinion download and install HWiNFO64 just to make sure you aren't having a faulty temp sensor on your motherboard interacting with BIOS (assuming you have not already). It has been known to happen.

Not sure about lag time on game performance. Frame rate stuttering could be a heating issue though. Your voltage is fine so you definitely have a seating problem somewhere. The stock Intel coolers are notorious for not doing well with that. Why? Because they don't have a back plate support that aftermarket coolers use and metal screws to firmly clamp down to the motherboard. Your CPU might also have a microscopic flaw in the surface further inhibiting cooling capacity with the stock cooler (look up the term "lapping a CPU"). It might either be concave or convex.
