Yesterday my mom dropped an external hard drive with 500 GBs of important info. This destroyed the port. I have split it open and removed the drive and then plugged it into a desktop. I used EaseUS to see that everything was still on it and the internals of the drive were not damaged. They are not. EaseUS wants $70 to remove the files and I would rather not pay that. When I try to open the drive files in the file explorer it says that the drive will need to be formatted. That erases all data correct? Anyone know of a free or cheaper program that could help me or will the files remain after I format the drive?

Yes formating the drive will erase the drive. You can try this program I never used it. How did you connect the drive to the pc from inside?

Or if this fails you can try freefilesync though not a recovery program it should find that drive just create a folder on the pc for coping the connected drive data. read how to use it first. I use it for my backups to my recovery drive.
