I looked into this more. This wifi device has issues in trem of kernel and a driver which is in progress. I found tnus post on mints fourm watch for an update on that thread below i would no expect the driver till Linux mint 19 to be realistic.

In the kernel the wifi indicator will light up on session boot. In a live session type

New users would not know but the wl for a wifi device mean Linux is saying duh. Drivers look more on like your Ethernet which has below. Your wifi has no kernel module at all. Do not give up on Linux mint I researched for a few month's before I decided. I always buy used since there are so many use laptops. I will say total cost of my t520 Intel i5 2 gen with new hdd and battery $300 could not be happier.
